Snow Plow Season has begun in Massachusetts and New England

The Blizzard of 2010 officially made Monday a “snow day” for many Massachusetts and New England residents. Thankfully, schools were closed which means many parents were already on vacation. So, who didn’t get the day off? The plows!

As the snowfall totals piled up between Sunday and Monday, the plows were out in full force, making sure our roadways were safe to travel on. After all, what would winter in New England be without the sound of a plow truck coming down your street with snow flying from the blade?

So for those of you that are out cleaning the streets (or maybe even driveways or parking lots), here are some insurance questions to consider to make sure you are properly covered during the plowing season.

#1 – I have a Business Auto policy. Does my policy provide coverage if someone slips and is injured after I have finished plowing?

No. Your Business Auto policy provides liability and possibly physical damage coverage for your vehicle. It will not protect you against claims made by someone who is injured as a result of your plowing. This coverage, known as Completed Operations coverage, must be obtained through a separate Business Owners Policy or General Liability Policy.

#2 – I have a plow on my personally owned light truck and I plan on clearing snow. Do I need a commercial auto liability policy?

Maybe. Having a snow plow attached to your truck does not disqualify you from having a Personal Auto Policy, even if you are paid for your plowing services. However, you will need to advise your insurance agent as your policy may need to be rated with a business class 30 rating.

#3 – I am attaching a plow to my vehicle. Does my Business Auto Policy provide physical damage coverage for the plow?

Yes. The plow itself will be covered for physical damage as long as the vehicle to which it is attached also carries physical damage coverage. (You will need to advise your insurance agent as to which vehicle the plow is attached to and as to what the Cost New of the plow is to ensure proper coverage.)

#4 – I plow for the town and/or businesses that require Additional Insured status. Do I need a commercial auto liability policy?

Yes. Additional Insured status cannot be added to a Personal Auto Policy, regardless of the weight or ownership of the vehicle. In this case, you will need to obtain a Business Auto Policy and have it endorsed with the appropriate Additional Insured endorsement.

#5 – Will the premium increase on my Business Auto Policy if I offer plowing services for a fee?

Possibly. It all depends on how much you will be plowing. Assuming that plowing is a side operation, (you are not plowing more than 20% of the time) than the premium may not increase. If however you plow more than that and your vehicle was previously classed as a “service” vehicle, your vehicle will need to be re-classed as “commercial” and you may incur an additional charge.

Please note, every insurance company treats plowing operations differently. Coverage afforded will depend on a variety of factors, including whether you are clearing main streets, back roads, driveways, highways or parking lots. Another consideration will be whether you have obtained registry issued “plowing” plates.

So, before the next storm hits, be sure to call a Massachusetts insurance agent to discuss your plowing operations and make sure you have the proper coverage.

5 Small Business Takeaways from the Inbound Marketing Summit 2010 (#IMS10)

Prelude…

It was raining and misty in Foxboro, MA…but that didn’t hide the towering football stadium from hovering above me. I entered through the Fidelity entrance and taking the escalator, slowly advanced to the upper level. After checking in, I saw a vendor area and a room probably half the size of the stadium filled with row upon row of tables. At the center of all the tables was a small stage and podium. Surrounding the entire room were flat screen TVs and large projection screens.

I was early (thankfully) so I had the luxury of finding a seat at a table right in front of the podium. Much to my surprise, the tables were equipped with several power strips to charge my tools. “These people don’t mess around”, I thought to myself! I settled in (after grabbing a delicious breakfast pastry) and powered up my equipment. I was ready for my first experience at the Inbound Marketing Summit (#IMS10) at Gillette Stadium.

I was amazed to see the hundreds of people that quickly flooded in the room. There were so many attendees that they had to add additional rows of just chairs. I felt bad for the people in the chairs, they must have got severe writer’s cramp! As everyone took their seats, the room became filled with marketing gurus and techies donning laptops, iPads, smartphones, video cameras, digital cameras, Livescribe pens and who knows what else. The WiFi was flowing!

Not sure what to expect or what to do, I quickly glanced at everyone else’s computer screens. I saw a variety of social media dashboards on the monitors, so I quickly loaded up HootSuite. I opened up a blank Word document and turned on the audio recording on my Livescribe…I was ready!

…Or so I thought! Having never attended the IMS, I wasn’t prepared for the inundation of information I received. We heard amazing speakers from all facets of inbound marketing, technology, and even government. The Twitter stream flowing on hastag #IMS10 was out of control! You could be physically watching the presentation and then in real-time, see a tweet response about something the presenter said (one of our tweets was even featured on The Pulse Network).  It was a whirlwind for two days and my head is still spinning. As I continue to digest what I’ve learned, I have found a lot of applications relevant to our small business clients and Partners of Berry Insurance. So for all local business owners in the Massachusetts area, here are some of my greatest takeaways from the conference that directly apply to you.

IMS what?

But first, what is Inbound Marketing? Inbound Marketing is the idea of putting content on the web so that people can find it and are then drawn in to contact or buy from you. Why is it important? Traditional “push” marketing is falling by the wayside. The retail shopping experience has completely transformed. Consumers are now doing their research online before they buy. You need to be there, get found and have great and engaging content. Essentially, inbound marketing makes it easier for potential clients to find you, instead of you finding them.

Now, on to the takeaways:

Don’t copy, emulate. Dharmesh Shah, co-author of “Inbound Marketing” said it best. You need to know your competition. Don’t copy what they are doing, but learn from them and do it better! It reminded me of this great book called “The Problem with Penguins” by Bill Bishop. Most business have the same problem – they look just like their competitors – like a waddle of penguins. Your job as a business owner is to get your company to stand out from the crowd. If you don’t, then you have now commoditized your business and potential customers will choose the company with the lowest price.

Don’t fear the big guys. “Intimacy is your friend” as stated by Gail Goodman. If you’re a coffee shop, don’t worry about what Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are doing. As a small business, you don’t have to jump through bureaucratic hoops before you can get permission to blog or tweet. You have the advantage of getting personal with your followers. Why? Because you don’t have as many! You can thank every customer that says something nice about you and you can reach out to those who say negative comments. If you had a million followers, could you do that?

Social media is only a tool, real-time is a mindset. I know, I harped on this in my first recap, but it’s so true. David Meerman-Scott, author of “Real-Time Marketing & PR” said it best – “So many organizations don’t have a culture of speed”. In today’s world, if you have something to say, you need to say it, NOW! Don’t bog yourself down on which social media tool to use to get your message out, just get it out there! The key is to be able to reach your audience quickly and with content that will engage or interest them.

The more time and resources you devote to social media, the greater your yield. As Gail Goodman said, “Nothing is instantaneous – things build”. A lot of small businesses we work with think that creating a Facebook page or a Twitter profile is enough. It’s a check off their social media to-do list. Wrong! Just having an account isn’t good enough. You need to work those tools daily to benefit from them. Engage with your followers by posting interesting and relevant content. Interact with others and their conversations. The great thing about social media for small business is that all the tools you need are free! You just need to dedicate your time to getting them to work for you. Start with a half hour or hour a day. I dare you.

Social media is about people, experiences, and conversations. Tell your story. If you sell inflatables for kids parties, don’t just blast out the rental fee, the dimensions and a product description. Tell the story about how Little Jimmy’s eyes lit up when he saw the big castle inflatable in his backyard for his party. Or maybe you are a wedding photographer. Don’t just list your package details and pricing. Talk about how it feels when your customers get their pictures back and cry and how beautiful they are, or laugh at the picture of their uncle doing the chicken dance which they didn’t see on the day of their special event. Don’t have time to write that story? Make time! And don’t be afraid to ask your clients for testimonials. If they are happy with your work, they’ll want to gloat about their experience!

So there you have it. I could have written on and on about some great advice for small businesses as they travel the social media landscape. But I figured you all are tired of reading at this point. If you have any advice that I missed, I’d love to hear it. You can comment below or tweet us at @Berry_Insurance.

Beware Wet Leaves

Wet leaves = icy roads

Wet leaves can make the roadways unexpectedly slippery, which makes road conditions almost as hazardous as when they have snow or ice on them.

I know when I was growing up, my mother always told me to drive especially safe when it rains in the fall. Why? Because wet leaves = ice. Wet leaves can make the roadways unexpectedly slippery, which makes road conditions almost as hazardous as when they have snow or ice on them. So for everyone in Massachusetts and New England, traveling in this Nor’Easter we’re experiencing today, here are some safety tips to remember:

  • Reduce your speed, especially on roads that curve or have sharp turns. Even with anti-lock brakes, it’s harder to stop on slippery surfaces.
  • Leaves tend to gather by the curb, so avoid those slippery spots.
  • Make sure you have you tires, brakes and wipers checked before going on a long trip.
  • Leave enough room between you and the car in front of you. This is always a safety measure, but is especially important when road conditions are hazardous.
  • Leaves can often mask road imperfections, such as potholes, or even curbs and street markings. Be careful of piles of leaves and be conscientious of road markings.

Auto Maintenance Blog Series: Cleaning the Interior of Your Car

It isn’t always fun, but every once in a while your car really needs a good interior cleaning! This can be done before or after the washing of the exterior of your car according to ehow.com. First, take a trash bag, and get all of the trash that has been accumulated out of the car. This includes papers, empty bottles and anything else that doesn’t belong.

The second step is removing all of the items that do not belong in the car. (If you’re anything like me, then you might have books, magazines, extra clothes, shoes, and many other things in your car). Next, grab a towel and some car cleaner, and wipe down all vinyl surfaces to help control dust. Use a paper towel and glass cleaner to wipe windshield (front & back), all windows, mirrors, and radio unit to avoid streaking.

Last but not least – vacuuming. First remove all the carpets from the car, as often dirt and trash can get pushed underneath. Use the vacuum attachments available to reach small spaces in the car to the best of your ability, and shake carpets out before placing back into the car. For finishing touches, place a new air freshener in your car!

Massachusetts Employers, How Reckless are Your Employees Driving?

After the September 30th Safe Driving Act was passed in Massachusetts, we’re now reminded again of driving safety, only this time the message is directed at employers. Every day millions of employees are using their car for work purposes – sales calls, errands, bank deposits, etc.  And with smart phones and other new technologies available to drivers, the car has now become some employees’ mobile office.

According to a recent study by the CDC, car crashes are the leading cause of workplace injury and death, and results in $99 billion in lost productivity. So to encourage employers to adopt safe driving practices and policies, the Network for Employers of Traffic Safety (NETS), an organization made up of large employers, working together to prevent work-related traffic accidents,  has designated October 4th-8th as Drive Safely Work Week.

Employers are encouraged to eliminate dangerous driving practices through the use of cell-phone bans and driver safety policies. Not only does this help encourage safe practices in the workplace, but it also will help you reduce your commercial fleet insurance premiums. Less accidents = better pricing!

Not sure how to get started? Give Berry Insurance a call! We can provide you with sample policies that you can begin enforcing at your business today.

Auto Maintenance Series: Washing Your Car the Right Way While Saving Some Cash!

Washing a car by hand at home is not difficult, but believe it or not, there is a right way to do it! The following steps outline the suggested process that should be used to do an at-home wash according to ehow.com.

First, choose a place away from trees to prevent sap from dripping or leaves and acorns from falling on your car during the washing. Next: time to set up. Make sure that all the doors and windows are closed so that you’re only washing the outside of your car! Grab a bucket, rag, some car/dish soap and the hose.

Put a dash of soap into the bucket (you don’t need much). Then take the hose and fill the bucket half way and set the bucket to the side. Take the hose and rinse any excess dirt off the car before the wash begins. Start from the top of the car, and work your way down to the tires. Take the rag and dip into the bucket of soap and water, starting again with the roof of the car.

After the entire roof as been washed (which may take more than one dunk into the bucket), rinse the roof off with the hose. Wash the other four main parts of the car in separate sections, rinsing each before starting the next! After each piece of the car has been washed, give the car one more good rinse down with the hose, before towel drying. Drying, like everything else, should start at the roof of the car, working down.

Be Informed: Don’t Let Bed Bugs Get into Your Massachusetts Home

Just the thought of bed bugs makes people cringe! Not understanding the source of the bugs, or how to exterminate them, can make life much more stressful. Before you say you’d never have bed bugs in your house, remember, the infestation has nothing to do with cleanliness. Clutter can contribute to the spreading of bed bugs, but typically the initial source is from something brought in to the home. Usually this happens when luggage is brought back into the home from a vacation.

Once the bed bugs are in your home, the damage is done. Unfortunately, the only way to verify that you have an infestation in your home is actually finding a bed bug, at which point you should immediately call a professional exterminator (you can actually spread the problem if not correctly dealt with). So what do these little buggers look like? Well, not too much different than a tick or roach. Bed bugs have six legs and are reddish in color. They do not fly, they scurry much like an ant, typically into dark, hidden areas.

Often these creatures ‘feed’ in the very early hours of the morning. Feeding consists of drinking blood, like mosquitoes; bed bugs only drink about two drops of blood every five to ten days. This causes no pain or discomfort for the person being bit, and can take two to fourteen days before redness or irritation is visible on the skin.

Can bed bugs really hurt you? Well, bed bugs are not known to transport diseases, and if you are bit, you should try not to itch since this can turn into an infection. People who already have medical conditions or children have a greater risk for infection because of an already low immune system.

Although bed bugs are not fun to have in your home, take care of them in the most efficient way possible, using a professional exterminator. After verifying that you do indeed have bed bugs (by finding a bug in the house), stop and call a professional! (Unfortunately, an infestation of bed bugs isn’t covered by your homeowners insurance.) With bed bugs, communication is vital! Allowing embarrassment to keep you quiet from informing guests about the infestation may cause people who were unaware to spread the bugs to their home or office.
