Sewage isn’t even a word that we enjoy saying, never mind the thought of it backing up into your home; what a nightmare! Well hopefully this is a nightmare that you’ll never have to live through! Here is some information to prepare you in advance so this will hopefully never happen to you:
What causes a backup?
Many things can cause a sewage backup within a residential area. Situations seemingly harmless such as flushing inappropriate items down the toilet or allowing drains to accumulate hair or even grease can lead to major problems later (i.e. pipes becoming clogged). Backups often can occur in adjoined homes, such as apartments or condo associations, where pipes are most likely shared between units.
The pipe flowing from the city’s main sanitary line and connecting to each home is called the ‘lateral line’. If the LL becomes blocked, a backup could arise. In addition, growing tree roots can cause damage to the LL pipe.
So, are you covered?
Probably not! Water and sewer backup is not covered under a standard homeowner’s policy. A Water and Sewer Backup endorsement can be added to your homeowner’s policy to ensure that coverage would be extended. The endorsement covers damage to your home, property, and most other expenses, except replacing sewer equipment. (For specific coverages available under the endorsement, be sure to contact your insurance agent.)
What’s next?
Well, both you and your city have to share the work! Be sure to avoid the dangers mentioned above and be diligent about having yearly plumbing and sewer inspections. And don’t forget to review your homeowner’s policy. If you don’t currently have the coverage, be sure to add it to your policy now, before you really need it.

Safety in a car is essential, but when passengers are children this becomes even more imperative! Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 3-14 years old according to Mass.gov. This astonishing statistic paved the way for a law concerning child passenger safety which was first enforced in 2008. Children can be easily injured in motor vehicle accidents. An incident as simple as a quick stop can severely injure a child that is not properly restrained in a car seat.
Massachusetts law clearly states children 8-years and under, or shorter than 57” tall MUST be correctly strapped into a federally approved child passenger restraint. If you need help to choose the right restraint for your child or don’t know how to install you car seat, not to worry; it’s all explained right on the Mass.gov website! There are often events held by the State Police that give details to parents about the correct ways to secure their children in the car. At these events, Police will make sure that child seats are installed correctly within automobiles.
Massachusetts parents can attest to car seats saving children’s lives! Some safe practice tips for parents are as follows:
Children should be in rear-facing infant seats from birth to 1 year AND until they are more than 20 pounds.
Children 1 to 4 years and 20 to 40 pounds should ride in a forward-facing child seat.
Children who have outgrown a child safety seat, typically when they are over 40 pounds or 5 years of age, should transition to a booster seat which assists in the proper fit of a safety belt.
Children 12 and younger should never sit in the front seat. The safest seating position is in the back seat, away from air bags.
Always wear your lap and shoulder belt when driving — it protects you in case of a crash and it sets a good example for children.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has teamed up with the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) to assist flood victims with recovering photos that have been damaged by water. If you have the negatives, you can always make more prints, so you have nothing to worry about! If not, don’t panic, there is still a chance to salvage the memories. If the photos are stuck together or moldy when they are found, salvation usually isn’t possible, but trying won’t hurt!
Rinsing off photos with clean water is the first step in the revival process. Many times photos are sensitive when wet, meaning that permanent scratches can easily be made in the photographs when in this vulnerable state. The pictures should next be placed into plastic bags and sealed. Ideally, each photo should be separated into a different bag, or separated with wax paper (this will not always be possible). Put the photos into the freezer once in plastic bag. When the photos appear to be frozen, remove from the freezer, defrost, and separate. Lay the pictures out somewhere clean, flat, and dry for the remainder of the drying process.
If a fridge or freezer is not available for you to nurture your photos with, there is another option, which is often not as reliable, but is worth a try in this desperate situation. Rinse your photos, and then they should be laid face up to dry fully, not stacked on top of one another. Photographs should not be exposed to direct sunlight because this can often damage the photograph. Photos conserved in this manner often curl when drying; this can be fixed after the photo is completely dry by a Conservator.
Feeling as though you might rather have a professional handle your family memories? The AIC helps to choose a Conservator or even become a Conservator yourself! To view some success stories from all over the United States, click here!

Unpredictable is the word that comes to mind when considering the possibility of a flood. Volatile natural disasters don’t give warning before striking which makes it essential to plan and be ready for anything. Recently, the Massachusetts area experienced extensive flooding which caused severe damage to many people’s personal property. Planning ahead could have eliminated the vulnerability associated with the chance of a disaster, as well as lessened the financial burden caused by the damage of the flood.
Coverage for damage caused by a flood is NOT included in the homeowner’s insurance policy or the commercial property insurance policy; but this in no way means you can’t be covered! Flood insurance can be added to commercial or residential property policies, and protects against damage caused by lengthy rains, storm surges, or snow. Many times it’s not realized the damage a few inches of water can cause. By clicking here you can asses your property inch-by-inch, in order to decide what the right amount of flood coverage for you is so that your assets are adequately covered.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides proper planning tips to be used prior to a flood to prevent damages if possible; these tips can be useful in making a selection of the perfect location to build or buy a home. The Flood Zone Designation breakdown entails descriptions of various intervals shown on the detailed map which gauges geographical ‘flood risk’ all over the United States. Precautions don’t minimize chances of disasters happening, but do provide coverage in case of a tragedy so that no matter what, YOU’RE COVERED!
