In 2009, President Obama first declared the month of September as National Preparedness Month. This year, with the wake of Hurricane Katrina only 5 years behind us, having our nation caught off guard during emergencies is something we never want to see happen again. Once again, the President has declared this month to be one focused on preparation. Being ready when disaster strikes is the main objective, as natural disasters are not going to be stopped, but they can be planned for.

With Hurricane Earl gearing up to sweep the East coast this weekend, hurricane tips are in high demand. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) wants residents of the Commonwealth to be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best! You can also check out more tips at Ready America.
First, all families should have a plan! Where is your family going to meet if getting split up? Planning before disaster strikes is half the battle, so be sure that each member of your family knows the plan and the contact person for their family. Second, be sure to familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes in your area, as well as having an emergency bag already packed and ready in case you must leave home in a hurry. Lastly, stay educated! Make sure you know the latest updates going on within your town and the surrounding communities!
It’s September and Berry Insurance wants all citizens to be prepared for the worst, so get your family emergency plan ready for this weekend’s hurricane! Prepare, Plan, & Stay Informed!

Franklin, Massachusetts is a historic town with new aged personality. With the launch of an improvement project in 2002, Franklin hopes to improve accessibility to, and within, the downtown area. The beautification of the town of Franklin consists of a colonial theme – remembering the old and yet embracing the new! Hoping to promote economic development, the Franklin Downtown Partnership carefully considered the changes to making Franklin more visually appealing, as well as, safe and convenient for pedestrians.

With financial support from MassDOT, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and a PWED grant, among other funding; Franklin hopes to make the downtown area more pedestrian friendly. Planned improvements include improving vehicular circulation, restoring deteriorated conditions, and improving visual appeal. Sidewalks, cross walks, signage, and site furnishings are some of the improvements developers feel may attract community members to shop in downtown Franklin, MA.
Safety is top priority during the renovation improvements downtown. Cobblestone will be embedded in the crosswalks so that they are clearly marked for both pedestrians and drivers. Reflectors will illuminate the crosswalks in the night hours making the downtown more pedestrian friendly. Signage will also be posted so ‘walkers’ can navigate various activities and events available in downtown Franklin.

The downtown area is full of great, local businesses, and is accessible to the T stop located next to Berry Insurance in the center of downtown! This allows for park and ride, or community members to park, and take a stroll. This project is scheduled to take place over the next few years in interest of keeping traffic flowing while the construction occurs.

So next time you’re in the area, be sure to stop by downtown Franklin, MA (and don’t forget to say hi to us)! We know you’ll love the quaint feel of the town, the wide variety of shops and restaurants, and the pleasant town folk and business owners.
