Rhode Island State and Local Police remind you to BUCKLE UP!

State and local police in Rhode Island have ramped up enforcement for the newly imposed primary seatbelt law with education and saving lives in mind. Rhode Island is the 23rd state to adopt this law; statistics say, when primary seatbelt laws are adopted, a 10-12% increase in seatbelt usage results. The primary seatbelt law was first enacted for RI residents in July 2011. A two month grace period was given by state police, but they have since issued 5,918 citations (since September 2011).

The next enforcement effort will be March 15th through the 24th; Rhode Island state and local police will set up nighttime patrol posts at busy intersections throughout the state looking for unbuckled drivers. Patrol posts will be established in well-lit areas so police will be able to easily pick cars out with drivers or passengers who are not wearing their safety belts. State and local agencies insist that this is not an effort to create revenue within the state; officers have no quotas to meet, this is really about saving lives on Rhode Island roads.

Yes, this is the first wave of check points for this seatbelt enforcement effort, but it certainly won’t be the last. In May, September, and November similar checks will be made. In 2011 seatbelt usage was at 80.4% in Rhode Island and law enforcement is looking to improve these statistics. Nationwide the usage rate is at 85% which means Rhode Island is slightly lagging, but law enforcement plan to get RI up to par.

SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES!

This seatbelt campaign is not meant to blind-side Rhode Islanders; overhead signs will be displaying the latest seatbelt advertisement on interstate 95, as well as within local communities.

check out the Rhode Island State Police website for more information.

Your delivery will include a lobster, steamers, mussels, chourico, corn on the cob, red bliss potatoes, and onions all packed in a reusable pot that’ll cook and serve up to 8 meals. A Cut Above in Franklin, MA holds Prom Dress Collection for Local Students

Any high school student will be able to tell you; prom time is fast approaching. And any of the parents would be able to tell you, prom time is expensive! Between the dress, the shoes, the hair, the nails, the make-up, and the jewelry parents end up shelling out unreal amounts of money! That’s not including the tickets, the limo, the flowers, and anything else that might be a necessity for this night!

Pam Smith, owner of A Cut Above in Franklin, Massachusetts thought of a great way to save parents some money, while helping her local community in this tough economy. Together, Pam and her staff thought collecting gently used prom dresses to be given to students at Franklin High School, King Philip High School, and Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School would be a great way to give back. Although this is the first year for these dress collections, it won’t be the last. Pam will also be collecting semi-formal dresses for the occasions less formal than Prom.

Dress collections are going on now through March 17th since all dresses will need to be cleaned before the in-salon dress fitting with the students. Dress donors will receive a receipt for tax deduction purposes and will also be given 20% off their next hair service to say thank you. A Cut Above is reaching out to community members for support and donations; anyone who has gone to the Prom knows that you’ll never have anywhere to wear a dress of this magnitude again (unless you live in Hollywood that is). So why not make a high school student’s night spectacular without having to actually purchase anything? It’ll only involve you digging into the back of your closet! Maybe you remember your Prom night and how great it was? Why not afford another lucky lady that same experience?

Students should contact Pam at A Cut Above in Franklin to discuss the details. Anyone that’s interested in receiving a Prom dress in the local area is eligible, so don’t count yourself out! Contact Pam today and why not schedule your up-do and nail appointments at the same time. Time slots are quickly filling up! An in-salon dress fitting will take place for students from March 20th-March 23rd so be sure to contact Pam today!

Atent for Rent – Your Source for Beautiful Tents and Memorable Events

We’re all familiar with the saying of being in “the right place at the right time”. Well for Stephen Capone, that’s exactly what happened.

Stephen and his family were throwing a surprise birthday party for their father and was in need of renting a tent. They called a local rental company only to find out that the owner was going out of the tent business, but offered to sell him the tent instead of renting. The first tent was purchased, and the party was a huge success. That year, 1984, Atent for Rent, was formed – and the growth of Atent for Rent began.

ATentForRent_facility

Today, Atent for Rent operates out of a 25,000 square-foot facility in Dedham, MA. Their beginnings with large tents give them the expertise to handle all your special event needs – be it wedding, bar/bat mitzvah or even corporate events and commencement exercises. Actively involved in the Mid-Atlantic Tent Renters Association (MATRA), the American Rental Association (ARA) and the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI), Atent for Rent will always stay on the leading edge of the tent rental industry.

But Atent for Rent is much more than just a tent rental company. They rent tents, flooring/staging, power, heat and air conditioning, furniture and accessories – making them a one-stop shop for all your event planning needs. All of the equipment is delivered and installed by Atent for Rent’s knowledgeable and energetic team. And with their own in-house washing and repair facility, your tents and accessories are guaranteed to arrive in excellent condition.

Looking to plan your next special event, gala or corporate function? Be sure to ask for Ben Moy or Alicia Candela when you give Atent for Rent a call. And don’t forget to mention their exclusive Partners of Berry savings offer for a 7% discount on orders (excluding events from 5/1/2012-6/23/2012).

Attention Massachusetts Small Business Owners: Become a Partner of Berry Insurance today! It’s FREE!

So what is any MA small business owner looking for these days when it comes to advertising? If you ask me, it’s an inexpensive and effective way to reach out to new and current customers. Many small business owners are struggling just to stay in business in this economy, and potential business opportunities cannot just be left on the table. As a business owner if you are not embracing the digital world you might be missing out on a boatload of potential opportunities. You don’t have to be everywhere on the internet, but you’ve got to get started sometime. The digital world provides business owners with so many FREE tools for self promotion, interaction, and networking; which are essential to the prosperity of your business, especially in the economy that we are currently faced with.

“You miss out on 100% of the shots you never take” said Wayne Gretzky; this is true in business as it is in life. As a small business owner in Massachusetts it’s really time to be where you customers already are, and that’s online. Through our Partners of Berry Insurance program we help local businesses in any stage of their digital presence to spread the word. Whether you are just realizing that the entire world’s online or if you already have a Facebook and Twitter account to stay connected with your clients, the Partners program can help you. The best part is that it’s all free (whether you are a client or not).

The first step in the Partners program is that you’ll be added to our dedicated Partners webpage. This is a digital business listing with an inbound link to your website giving anyone who views this listing the chance to contact you, as well as print a coupon for savings on your products/services. After the digital business listing is live, the second step involves us writing a blog to highlight your business. The blog is meant to highlight how you are unique and different from other people in the same industry.

An example of a Partners coupon from our digital business listing page

A YouTube video is the final component included within the Partners program, but don’t think that means that’s where the benefits to your business end. We are extremely active on the social media scene where we connect to all Partners, share coupon offers, blogs, and also videos. Partners are highlighted within our monthly newsletter which is sent to about 3,000 New Englanders; let Berry Insurance help get your name out there!

You might be thinking how much can a Mass insurance agency really know about marketing? Well we don’t promise to know everything, but we have made a serious commitment to digital marketing here at the agency! We proactively seek social media knowledge and are dedicated to this program. Part of this commitment is keeping up to date on the latest and greatest information in the digital world. We love sharing our digital knowledge and helping businesses to take that next step in the digital world; no matter if you are a beginner or just want to know what’s next. If you want your business to survive it’s time to get serious about digital marketing. The time is now!

Interested in becoming a Partner of Berry Insurance? GREAT! We have offices in both Franklin and Quincy, Massachusetts where we’d love to have a meeting to learn more about your business and discuss the Partners program. Changes in the Massachusetts Auto Market

With the fragile state of the economy you’d think that people would be investing in smaller, more fuel efficient cars, but for Massachusetts drivers this isn’t true. Trucks are flying off the shelves faster than cars this year and Massachusetts. In 2011 light truck sales rose 16% when compared to 2010, but overall auto sales took a steep plunge in MA.

The 20 hottest selling cars in Massachusetts are listed in the Boston Business Journal; I’ve listed the first 10 here.

  1. Honda CR-V
  2. Toyota Camry
  3. Honda Accord
  4. Toyota Corolla
  5. Toyota RAV4
  6. Honda Civic
  7. Ford F-Series
  8. Nissan Altima
  9. Chevrolet Silverado
  10. Volkswagen Jetta

Think the rapid increase in light truck sales have something to do with the very intense 2010 winter season we were hit with in New England? I’d love to hear any comments and thoughts on the subject, share your thoughts!

Spring Break Safety Tips for College Students: Awareness is Half the Battle

Known in the college world as Fat Tuesday, February 21st is really just an excuse for celebration. There isn’t any harm in finding things to celebrate in life; really life should be about the small things. This time of year also brings school vacations for students. For college students this is one of the best times of year; SPRING BREAK!

Depending upon the school attended, and the allotted time off for students; typically students head for warmer climates. Florida and California are some of the popular states within the United States, but many times students head overseas for all inclusive stays with friends. Mexico is a high traffic area during late February and March. Busy with both college students, and criminals waiting to pray on these college students. American teenagers need to remember they are not in their native country, and should be extra careful and conscious of their surroundings.

Awareness is half the battle, but sometimes college students get caught up in the heat of the moment. Many times these students are newly able to drink, and alcohol is often a factor, present at the scene of bad decisions. Most times criminals target students on a spring break vacation because of opportunity. Such as, they are seen with a pricey item, seen with an abundance of cash, or maybe just being careless when it comes to their surroundings. The main point is, these are crimes of opportunity, if the opportunity is not given they won’t take place. Obviously these situations cannot always be avoided, but understanding that you need to be EXTRA careful is vital.

Some things can only be learned by experience, and going on your first vacation without any parents is most certainly a learning experience (especially if it’s to another country). Especially during this spring break time, criminals are just waiting for the right opportunity to prey on unsuspecting travelers. Research has shown that many times criminals will even hang out around spring break filled hotels, be sure you don’t count the hotel staff completely out. Use your intuition in deciding if you can trust your hotel staff members, usually the hotel staff is very helpful and informative about the local area.

It’s important to keep a low profile, especially when it comes to money and spending. First, before you leave for an international vacation, it might be a good idea to alert your bank. When actually on the trip, the last thing you want to do is let anyone know that you have money on your person, or valuables in your hotel room. Especially in this economy, criminals are increasingly desperate. Be sure the windows in your hotel room are locked at all times, and you’re being choosey in giving people the number to your room or hotel name.

If you do need to visit the ATM, one inside the hotel is your best bet. If this is not possible find a well lit area that you feel safe; asking a trusted member of the hotel staff is a good strategy. If you plan to do some shopping while on your vacation, especially if this will be from street vendors using cash; have your money separated. The last thing you want to do is put a bulls-eye on your forehead by revealing all the cash you have for vacation in your wallet. This is definitely asking for trouble.

Although calls from your cell phone might be expensive since they are likely international; it’s still smart to have your phone with you! Just in case something were to happen, you’re going to want to be able to contact that girl that’s separated from the group, your parents, or even emergency services in that emergency situation. It’s smart to stay in groups and not veer off alone, but if someone does get separated you can stay in communication with them, or even quickly determine that something is not right. Don’t leave yourself without any means to communicate with others. Even during the bright sun of the day, when in another country, it’s important to be on high alert all the time.

Preparing and protecting yourself is really all you can do. To all college students: have an amazing and safe spring break vacation.

Boston Red Sox 2012 Spring Training: Ch Ch Ch Changes!

It’s almost Boston Red Sox season again, and just as expected, lots of changes have taken place during the off season. With less than a week remaining until the start of Spring Training the heat is on to cheer up Boston sports fans since that recent let down by the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Boston fans are hoping that, unlike Terry Francona during the 2011 season, Bobby Valentine will lead the Sox to the post season. Let’s face it, a sports organization isn’t so different from owning a business; passion, problem solving, and change are all needed to be successful. Game time means it’s time to get out there and give it your ‘A’ game, no matter what.

Making the right changes in the off season to keep your business flourishing in the on-season is really what it’s all about. Are you making the necessary changes to keep your passionate fans happy like the Sox have? Well you should be! You’ll never be able to please 100% of customers, but sticking true to the core beliefs of your organization helps to attract and retain the right customers for your Massachusetts business.

Take an example from the Red Sox; during the off season some tough yet necessary decisions were made in order to align with the core beliefs of the Boston Red Sox organization; changes that we hope will make a difference in the upcoming season. Are you implementing the same sort of strategy with your Massachusetts small business? It’s time to start planning for the future! We wish Bobby Valentine and the Sox all the best in their upcoming season, everyone at Team Berry Insurance is on your side!
